Last month I traveled to Poland from England. Being an Englishman I obviously am not familiar with the Polish language, therefore I experienced many issues for this reason. I wanted somebody who could have translated the language, i.e. I wanted a translator Polish to English, however I could not find one.
The difficulties started from from the very start of my visit. The accommodation I was lodging in surprisingly did not have any good English speaking attendants. Only the manager was able to talk with me. Right from the door keeper to the waiter, all Polish! Frustrated I decided to take a stroll around the hotel. While roaming, I came across a Flower dealer – gorgeous daffodils and cute roses packed her flower bouquet.
I asked her about the price of one flower bunch and the lady just kept looking at me for 5 minutes. Having already gotten used to the treatment I chose to find a young boy who know how to translate Polish to English. However as I mentioned I searched, but could not find one. The tour therefore had this kind of problems all the while.
Luckily my work was not of speaking to the Polish people much, so I was able to focus on my work. Occasionally such events cropped up to amuse me, that people are so unwilling to learn the international language. Yes you may say that was real patriotism, but in the search of true patriotism they lost a few foreign currency which could have had some effect on the overall economy!
But I was too ignorant to enter a foreign language nation without knowing anything about them. Now that I have came back, I am studying the Polish language – at least partially. Finally as they say in Polish – pozegnanie. (I made use of a translation Polish to English software program for the last sentence)
